At a sunny Labour Party Conference this week, Ed Miliband set out a series of policies to tackle the living standards crisis. These measures will make a real difference to people in New Cross and Lewisham.
Most prominently, we are promising to freeze energy bills from the election in May 2015 right up until the start of 2017. The Coalition have done nothing to control rocketing energy prices. We would ensure there is no increase for 20 months while we sort out the market that is so ripping people off. This would save families an average of £120 a year.
This policy has hogged most of the headlines. But there are many more besides. For families struggling with the cost of childcare, we’d increase the free entitlement of childcare for 3 and 4 year-olds to 25 hours a week. Our promise to build 200,000 homes a year across the country would help deal with the housing crisis and reduce the rapid growth in rents and house prices. We're delighted that we are already building the first new Council homes in Lewisham for 30 years.
Finally, we’ve also promised to repeal the Bedroom Tax, one of this government’s most vicious and vindictive policies. Most of those facing the Bedroom Tax are disabled and we regularly hear of the hardship it’s causing locally.
These policies show the difference a One Nation Labour government could make to local residents – and there are lots more to come. We look forward to discussing them with you on the doorstep and hearing your ideas.
